by cruise.ships.jobs on Oct.12, 2009, under Cruise News
A crowd of more than two hundred gathered at the old and aging terminal on Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina to hear the plans for a new cruise passenger terminal that is much needed to handle the growing cruise industry in the state, provide waterfront access and security and to reflect the State’s historic character.
Although there is no budget nor timeline for the new terminal, the president and CEO of south Carolina State Ports, Jim Newsome, said that there is a still a big need for a new terminal to replace the almost 40 year old existing terminal.
Carnival Cruise Lines will make use of Charleston as its homeport for its 2056 passenger Carnival Fantasy beginning next spring. Carnival cruise lines do operate in the existing port but only mostly winter cruises.
Millions of dollars which will be very helpful to the local and state economy is expected from the new terminal which will allow the passengers to embark on cruises from the State anytime of the year.
Mayor Joseph Riley is delighted as it is a great way to expose Charleston to tourists. “Great cities are always evolving, trying to do things better,” he said. “We can do better and must do better.”
Local residents are invited to participate for the terminal planning and a public meeting with in this month. Cooper Robertson and Partners of New York, is the design firm that is making plans for the terminal project. The same firm has worked on some projects including the Waterfront Park in

Crystal Cruises Revisits San Francisco
by cruise.ships.jobs on Sep.29, 2009, under Cruise News
The Japanese owned Crystal Cruises who used to cruise to San Francisco and diverted it routes in 2005 has decided to return in 2011. An increase in the tourism industry for San Francisco along with a boost in its economy is expected along with the arrival of the cruise ship.
The company Crystal Cruises who has routes for Alaska, New York and the Panama Canal will continue to service all of these port but will be heading to San Francisco port as its permanent home. The port of San Francisco reports that it presently accommodates nine cruise lines with 60 vessel calls and more than 200,000 related guest per year.
The Port of San Francisco is expected to complete a modern cruise ship terminal at Pier 27 by 2013, the same site where several development projects has failed for the last few years. Until then, the 299 passenger vessel Crystal Symphony will be one of the first vessel from the cruise line to dock at Pier 35. Pier 27, which is located at the foot of Telegraph hill, has been given a $3.5 million dollar contract by the Port Commission with the city’s Department of Public Works for Architectural and Engineering Work for its new terminal as Pier 35, who has served cruise ships and the city for years, is in need of upgrades and repairs as it is dilapidated and too short for some cruise vessels.
Port Executive Director Monique Moyer stated “The continuity of a home-port ship for the summer season on the San Francisco waterfront means a lot for the local economy, both in terms of tourism and also jobs for longshoremen and ship support workers”.

Tourists Robbed on Cruise Ship
by cruise.ships.jobs on Sep.10, 2009, under Cruise News
Costa Cruises’ Costa Classica, carrying almost 2000 passengers, had four of its passenger robbed at high seas. Four Chinese tourist and a Shanghai resident had nothing else to do except to report the incident to the Shanghai marine police this Saturday when their cruise ship docked at the city for a tour from China to Japan and South Korea.
The cruise was scheduled to last for a week. The Shanghainese Liu Bo was the one who reported the crime to the authorities. Traveling with his wife, a total of $700 and 10,000 yen or $106, has been stolen from the safe in their cabin. The Shanghainese was also the first victim to alert the management about the incident followed by the two tourist from Beijing and another from Southern Guangdong Province.
$300 was lost from the cabin safe of one of the tourist from Beijing and the others has lost 2,000 yuan or $293 in cash.
The Shanghainese announced that “One thing in common about our losses is that only part of our cash was stolen. In my case, I lost US$700 of US$1,700 cash, while the Beijing tourist had US$300 of US$900 taken out of his safe. The thief was obviously cunning, trying to make the losses less obvious”.
The victims suspected that the Filipino who cleaned their rooms may have something to do with this. But after the officials have searched the Filipino’s cabin and the man himself, they have announced that they didn’t found any large amount of cash. The cruise staff was immediately suspended upon the request of the Shanghainese.
The Shanghainese would be staying in Shanghai for another week as he waits for the reports of the police and the management of the vessel.

Cruise Port Improvements in New Orleans
by cruise.ships.jobs on Sep.02, 2009, under Cruise News
The Board of Commissioners made an agreement with the Louisiana Department of Transportation’s Port Priority Program for the improvement of the cruise ship terminal at Julia Street Wharf in New Orlean’s.
8.1 million dollars coming from the state and 800 thousand dollars from the Port will be the fund for combining two existing cruise terminal and make it a state of the art facility. This project has received the highest approval rating during the 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature.
Port President and CEO Gary LaGrange says that “The improved Julia Street Cruise Terminal will make New Orleans more attractive and more available to cruise lines looking to expand their home port options, as it will double our capacity to handle multiple ships at one time… The close proximity of our terminals to the historic French Quarter and other nearby attractions, and the tourism lure of New Orleans itself, makes cruising from New Orleans like two vacations in one. We are confident that this selling point combined with the renovated terminal will attract new, home-ported cruise ships to our Port.”
To attract more and larger cruise ships, two existing smaller ship terminals will be transformed into one bigger terminal. Interior of the terminal will be renovated to allow the largest cruise ships to load and unload passengers, supplies and merchandise easier and safer.
The project is expected to increase the ports productivity and bring 150 new jobs to the state. It is also expected to generate more than 169 million dollars for the region’s economy on the yearly basis.
Lagrange has added “This project will greatly enhance transportation efficiency by diverting containers and other general cargo from highway trucks to rail and marine modes of transportation… It would also diminish the Port’s carbon footprint and increase overall efficiency of transportation services in southeast Louisiana and the Port’s mid-American service area.”

Chiapas Port Development
by cruise.ships.jobs on Aug.19, 2009, under Cruise News
Plans to build up Puerto Chiapas’ Port as a commercial center and tourist spot is taking form as cruise liner horns are heard more often.
The past improvements of the port has shown good results in tourism. More cruise liners are attracted and export of goods from the region to other countries has been more efficient. Officials are trying to upgrade the old fishing ports to showcase the Chiapas’ beauty and natural resources to turn around the economic status of the region-which is poorest in the country.
Juan Sabenas, governor of Chiapas, is looking forward for the development of the port as from the past improvements, passengers from Europe and America would spend the day in the region giving more or less $100 per head.
The General Director of the Port Authority in Puerto Chiapas, Alfonso Perez, says that the Port is a brand new one as it was inaugurated in 1975 as a fishing port. He also adds “Now, in 2005, a lot of money was invested to upgrade the port and now we are a port that started receiving cruises.”
He then remembers that in 2006. he only sees one cruise liner in the port and in present, he is expecting more than 20 more. Chocolates, flora and fauna and Mayan archaeological digs are some of the few offers that the region has for the tourists.
He adds”We have another income that comes from the tuna-fish ships and some other cargo that comes to port of Chiapas … We are not depending just on the cruises where we are doing very well…..There are other industries that will come to port of Chiapas. One is the oil. You know in Mexico, Petroleum Mexicanos is the Mexican oil company, and they are going to open a facility here in the port with an investment of around $15-million, which is very nice, very good.”
He believes that the port is going to be a long term investment and Federal Government funds would be needed for the improvements. He also estimates that in 5 years, they maybe able to operate themselves and give profit to the region with new cruise ship jobs.

Fishing Industry Leaders Visit to New Terminal
by cruise.ships.jobs on Aug.10, 2009, under Cruise News
The two-story, 143,000 square feet building with berthing space for two ships, Smith Cove Cruise Ship Terminal, opened in April. Processing cold storage, facilities, factory trawlers and other operations, it shares space on terminal 91 underneath the Magnolia Bridge.
It was on June 24, 2009 when fishing industry leaders had their first tour of the new facility along with the rest of Terminal 91. Concerns were raised to the Port of Seattle regarding some issues with the terminal.
The manager of dock operations for the port, Greg Englin, says that “The difficulty for the Port of Seattle, which operates Terminal 91, is to integrate all the different operations with the increase in use brought on by the cruise ship terminal”.
The owner of Ballard Oil, Warren Aakervik asked if the fishing trawlers would be turned away if and when cruise ships were docked. Englin then answered that they didn’t have to but it would need a few more effort on the part of the port staff.
Some rules needed to be disregarded to make sure that all ships will get into the terminal but it wouldn’t be a regular occurrence said the managing director of the port’s seaport division, Charlie Sheldon.
“Out of the whole cruise season, there are maybe 20 days when it gets crazy,” he said. “But when it gets crazy, it gets really crazy.” Sheldon also announced that the fishing industry gives tons of jobs to the people and that 50 percent of those are on the kinds of trawlers who needs to dock at the Terminal. “The fish business is hugely important to us,” he said. “And, we want to make sure it works.”

by cruise.ships.jobs on Jul.28, 2009, under Cruise News
Hebridean International Cruises was forced to sell their ship Hebridean Spirit due to high operating costs and the weakness of the sterling. However, the sale of the Hebridean Spirit was still not enough to save the Hebridean Cruises and has now gone into administration. The Hebridean Spirit, which was believed to be sold for almost £5 million to a Middle Eastern buyer will not re-emerge as a cruise ship but will be converted into a private yacht.
The ship Hebridean Princess, which the Queen chartered for her 80th birthday, will continue to provide the companies programs for cruises as they search for a buyer.
Swan Hallenic offers discounts on deals for their 320 passenger ship Minerva, larger than Hebridean ships, to passengers whores cruises on Spirit were canceled. Swan, headed by former P&O boss Lord Sterling, is also a potential buyer for the Hebridean Princess.
